Dress for 1786
Originally uploaded by Mme. du Jard

The next part of the jigsaw is finished, the beaded belt. Like the description suggests, it is buttoned in the back.

Just a peek of my recent project.

Duchie Award!

Wooow! I was awarded twice! Both http://munichrococo.blogspot.com/ and http://kleidungum1800.blogspot.com/ did send me the Duchie Award! Now at last I find some time to say thank you :)

Woow!

When you receive a Duchie Award, post on your blog (in any order):

  • Five things you love about historical costuming/wearing vintage clothing
  • Three (or more) blogs to pass the Duchie Award onto
  • A link back to the blog who awarded you the Duchie

1) Let's be realistic, 99% of todays "fashion" is completely boring and medicore. A friend of mine said some years ago "you don't really have to be a woman to wear that". So I love about historical fashion, that it has got style and taste, even in a dirty regency workingwoman dress I feel looking better than in in todays clothes.

2) I love doing research and explore history from an angle that you don't learn at school, it is so fantastic to learn something new and you are never finished, because there are still so many sources that haven't been read...

3) I love handsewing!

3) Ich liebe es von Hand zu nähen!

It's quite difficult for me to choose whom to award, because there are so many inspiring blogs outthere...

But I have to make a decicion, unfortunatelly my nominations are not really creativ, all of them already have Dutchie Award.

1) http://kleidungum1800.blogspot.com/

In my opinion Sabine has set new standards in recreating fashionprints and extant clothes of the regency era, she also brought me into the 1810's that I didn't liked bevore ;)

2) http://augustintytar.blogspot.com/

Only recently I did discover this blog and I'm so impressed by this lady!

3) http://ladyofportlandhouse.blogspot.com/

In my opinion she makes the best dresses for the 1790's - she deffintely got the Heideloff-Style!

Another dress for 1811

Unfortunatelly I couldn't wear it yet, but I will take better pics as soon as I have the opportunity.

Feiernde Sieder

So here is the complete outifit that I have created for "Apollonia Seckel", I have keept to a picture from Schwäbisch Hall where our event is located and to several dolls I have seen in "Mon plaisir" in Arnstadt. That is a stunning collection of early 18th century doll houses that the prince's widdow has collected in that time. Unfortunatelly photographing was stricktly forbidden there so I have only pictures in my head and some notes.
Celebrating satlers

Strassbourger Schneppenhaube
Strassbourger Schneppenhaube von hinten

Since a long time I wanted to have a cap that is differnet from the others and the beautiful salteress on the picture deffinitely wears a "Schneppenhaube" (pointed cap), but I had the problem not to know how it looked from behind. At Arndstadt I saw several dolls with such caps and they were cut exactly like elizabethan coiffes expect that the foreheadpiece was cut in one with the coiffeband, this solution seemed quite simple to me, because another similar type of that cap that I saw in Strassbourg was rather complicated and decorated with a lot of pailletes etc, and this cap was shrinked to a kind of aliceband and I had no notion how it was worn, if I needed a matching white undercap...

This jacket was finished some time ago, but it was not before yesterday when I could make a cord to lace it. I made it with a lucet.

I was so lucky to be allowed to take the pattern from a original and also luckily it fitted me almost without alterations! (I will ask if I'm allowed to distribute the pattern, but I can't promise anything)

I wasn't idle during my holidays and made over a hundred (sic!) fabric-yoyos. The fabric for the evening dress has also arrived yet.

My first travel in to the year 1811 is over now, but the next is to come. So it is high time for a lot of ruffles ;)
For eveningdress I have choosen this fashionprint from the costumes parisiennes. The fabricroses around the hem and neckline I did interpret as fabricjo-jos and thanks to clover's rapid jojomaker (I looove all that stupid clover-sewing-gizmos) it will be a little less work than making them freehand.

At first I wanted to make a coat, but it turned out too plain and so
changed it into a spenzerjacket. Thanks to the furcollar it will shurely be very cozy. I have chosen cotton-plush instead of fur (I'm not totally against real fur, but it should be from happy animals and I haven't got the time to find enough matching rabbit fur from local breeders)

The dress from the fashionprint seemed not so easy to be copied (do I see right? Are these really little carrots printed on???)
So I looked for another model in plain white.
I love the scale-like (don't know the proper english word for this) ruches and the multiple-puffed sleeves.
I wonder if I will be able to finish all this until mid-september...

Bad Windsheim

As I have written in my last post, I have made a little timetravel into the year 1811.
In the little huntingmanor of Bad Windheim (open-air-museum) I have been Apollonia maid to mistress Meinet the wife of the steward who keeps the house in the absence of the propietor.
For the first time we had the oportunity to live in a little, but fine house (and not only in cottages like elsewhere) there was a butler, hunter, cook, two kitchenmaids, footman, boy and my huble self who tried to make the time as pleasent for our mistress and master as possible.
In the morning there first had to be made hot washing-water for Madame and Monsieur and than the breakfasttable had to be prepared, of course I had to assist Madame with her toilette and arrange her fashionable headdresses.
But - just have a look:

At our next event I will act as a lady's maid and besides I will occasionaly lend a helping hand in the kitchen, so I wanted something to protect my desses and as another item in my wardrobe for 1811 I have sewn an apron after the famous painting of a woman doing embroidery by Georg Friedrich Kersting.
It turned out very plain, but I like it. I think I will use it also for modern cooking.

Picknick 1811

After a onehour-walk we arrived at the "Schwarzenburg" an idyllic ruine from the 12th century.

There we had a picknick and matching to the romantic setting read in a contemporary gothic novel and did scetching.

Before I have to take a unwillingly internetbreak (which I think is nothing wrong!) a last short post from me.

Yesterday I decided to turn again to an old abandoned project of mine. Since four (!) years this UFO haunts our livingroom...

My dearest hubby has told me sometimes that it's a pity that I don't finish it and that I have invested quite some money in it...

I think he is perfectly right and I should continue with it.

It's a patchworkblanket in english paper piecing technique, consisting of repro-fabrics of the 18th and early 19th century.

Ca. 150 of 700 hexagons are already sewn together... the rest shall be sewn in the next weeks.

The first dress for 1811 is ready! ...and not ironed poperly...
You know that fabric ;) Yes it's Tilda... I thought it fitted very well for the Empirestyle.
I made the pattern myself, based on the regency-dress-pattern by sensibility.com
My special thanks to kleidungum1800 for the ruching-tips :)

This saturday there were two shopping-events in my town: the dutch fabric-fair and a big fleamarket...

At the first I mostly bought linnen but at the latter my love and I made some remarkable bargains!

Erbauliches:

A bible from 1773 in a pretty good contition and a reformd catechism from swizerland from 1747. I always wanted a period bible, but they are usually quite expensive - which is weired because even in poor houses there was one (in this case I payed only 15€ for each book!)

...and vanity:

tow fashionprints from the "Journal des Luxus und der Moden" and a cap for me and a snuffbox for the master of the house.

The cap is probably 19th or early 20th centruy because it is machinestitched, but very neatly so that you almost can't make it out. I suppose it is part of a tradtional costume... can anyone help me to date it or tell me from where it could be? Anyway, the shape fits perfectly for regency. The snuffbox is a 19th century replica from a 18th century original.

Because I'm currently sewing a nice wardrobe for a mid-18th century common woman for somebody, I want to show off here some of the parts and make some how-to's. And here is the first part: the sunday's apron.

The pattern is very closely to the original from "costume close-up", but this one is pieced and I did omit this.

First I did cut the bib and did make a small hem all around with overcast stitch.

Than the skirt has been hemed but only the sides and the bottom. On the top edge you have to cut out a wedge as a counterpart to the bib's tip (sorry, I didn't make a photo)

Than you sew two lines of running stitches on the top edge for shiring. Than the waistband is sewn to the edge, you have to catch every pleat with an overcaststich on both sides.

At last the bib will be sewn to the waistband, also with overcast stitches.

Now that the "Ratsherr" is almost finished I'm highly motivated to start with my 1811-wardrobe and I have looked again for inspirations. To be honest, most of the engravings are from 1812, but I just hope that noone will notice ;) And if: I will just say that I'm a trendsetter and everyone will copy my style next year...

The sober polkadot-dress will have to wait untill I have found the perfect fabric, or let it have printed. Instead I found this ruchy (is this the right word for something with ruches?) model. I think it would look fine with the Tilda-fabric

I'm not really shure yet what coat I want, but I need something cozy!

I like this model, too, but I'm not shure from when it is, there were two dates given, 1809 and 1820... What would you think? For '09 it looks quite ruchy but for 20 there might be too less ruches ;)

This one I could also imagine with long undersleeves (I have to think of the weather in Hamburg...)

Und nochmehr Schuten und interessante Ärmel und Ausschnittlösungen:
And more bonnetts and intersting sleeves and necklines:

And this one I like because you can deffinitely see that they wore dresses under the coats (and not the coat like a dress only with the underwear beneeth)
